D’où ça vient ?
« Irish » est le mot anglais pour dire « Irlandais ». Il vient de l’ancien anglais « Iras » qui signifie « peuple d’Eirin. » « Eirin » qui veut dire « bon pays » est l’ancien nom que l’on donnait à l’Irlande. Et « saint Patrick », c’est le patron des Irlandais et des ingénieurs ! Il est célébré, non seulement en Irlande, le 17 mars, mais aussi dans le monde entier par toute la communauté irlandaise.

La couleur verte est à la mode cette semaine, aux États-Unis, et dans chaque pays où la communauté irlandaise est présente. Car le 17 mars est une journée festive pour les 70 millions de personnes qui se revendiquent d’origine Irlandaise dans le monde, c’est la Saint-Patrick. Fête et bonne humeur sont donc au rendez-vous de cette journée plutôt verte !
Un peu d’histoire
Entre 1820 et 1860, des millions d’Irlandais ont émigré, principalement aux États-Unis, à la recherche d’une vie meilleure et d’un travail. Aujourd’hui, 44 millions d’Américains revendiquent des origines irlandaises.
Les célébrations
Pour marquer cet événement quasi national, le Premier ministre irlandais Brian Cowen a été reçu à la Maison Blanche pour remettre au président Barack Obama un bol de trèfles, l’emblème national de l’île !
Bien que les Américains soient majoritairement protestants – les saints n’existent pas dans la religion protestante -, la fête de la Saint-Patrick est reconnue aux États-Unis. Les maisons sont décorées de trèfles ; les gens s’habillent en vert et ils ont le droit de pincer tous ceux qui ne portent pas de vert. Sans oublier, les parades ou les défilés. La plus ancienne est à Boston et à New York… la ville où les émigrés irlandais ont débarqué au XIXe siècle.
Les prix
Le prix de la ville la plus verte est décerné à Chicago. Depuis 1962, la capitale de l’État de l’Illinois, colore, chaque année, son fleuve en vert ! Quant à celui de la cravate la plus verte, il est attribué au Premier ministre Irlandais, Brian Cowen.

Wednesday, March 17th, St. Patrick’s Day was celebrated by the entire world, including the US. 44 million Americans put on their green clothes and ate an Irish dinner. This holiday is the occaison for Americans of Irish descent to celebrate the country of their ancestors, because, between 1820-1860, several million Irish immigated to the US to find work.
What’s that mean ?

And St. Patrick is the patron saint of the Irish and of engineers ! He’s celebrated on March 17th, not only in Ireland but all over the world by the Irish community.

To mark this almost-national event, Irish First Minister Brian Cowen visited the White House to give President Barack Obama a pot of shamrocks, the national symbol of the island !
Even though Americans are mostly Protestant-saints don’t exist in Protestantism-St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated in the United States. The houses are decorated with shamrocks ; people dress in green and can pinch whoever isn’t wearing green. Ad you can’t forget the parades ! The oldest are at Boston and New York, the cities where Irish immigrants arrived in the 19th century.

The greenest city goes to Chicago : Since 1962, the capital of Illonis dyes its river green each year ! For the greenest tie , the prize goes to Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen ;
