5G is the 5th generation mobile network, the technology that lets us use our cell phones.

It follows on from 1G, 2G, 3G and… 4G.

The first generations only allowed us to make phone calls and send text messages.

The latest have allowed us to develop new uses: connecting to the Internet, using apps or making video calls.

With 5G, downloading huge amounts of data to your cell phone is even faster.

For example, this allows us to watch movies or play high-resolution video games wherever we are!

But 5G’s controversial. Some are afraid that its waves are dangerous for our health.

Health authority experts say that, in theory, the risk is small.

Others say it’s a huge waste of energy, just when we should be saving it to reduce pollution.

In fact, 5G technology uses 3 to 4 times less energy than 4G.

However, by making mobile digital tools even faster, 5G will multiply the volume of data exchanged… by 10!

Which means in the end, we’ll use far more energy, and emit more greenhouse gases.

Unless… people learn to be reasonable and put their cellphones down from time to time!
